Abstract
This paper approaches the geographic concentration of the industry in the territory of the Rio Grande do Sul in the period from 1872 until 2000. In theoretical terms, from original localization decisions it has a movement of geographic concentration motivated for agglomeration factors. From one determined moment a movement of geographic spillover is observed, therefore disaglomerative factors start to be more excellent in the decisions of localization of the industries. In the period of 1872 until 1937, were evidenced a concentration movement in the region of German and Italian immigration, but the regions of Porto Alegre and Rio Grande are the most significant in industrialization terms. From 1940 an increase of the concentration was evidenced that lasts until the beginning of the decade of 1990, and from a process of geographic spillover is had there, that can be classified as a “concentrate spillover”.
