- Abstract
- In periods of economic downturn, real income losses and/or unemployment of male household head may induce secondary family workers to join the labor force, inflating the unemployment rate. This hypothesis is called the added worker effect. The goal of this article is to test this hypothesis for female spouses of the Metropolitan Region of Porto Alegre, Brazil. We use an econometric method, so to isolate the effects of other variables but the ones listed above on female labor supply. Results suggest that the added worker effect is a valid representation of female spouses labor supply behaviour, in the face of an income loss of the male head, not necessarily his job loss.
