- Abstract
- These notes are the preliminary outcomes of a research concerning the contemporary development projects set up in the state of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) during the governments of Antônio Britto and Olivio Dutra. The paper includes a critical evaluation of these projects which is grounded on a brief review of the economic history of this region throughout the twentieth century. This review identifies distinctive periods of the evolution of the regional economic development and sheds light on the social and historical arrangements that contributed for Rio Grande do Sul to preserve its situation as the fourth largest regional economy in the country during the twentieth century. The theoretical framework of this paper is based on the Regulation Theory. In this paper it is asserted that the roots of and the strengths and weaknesses of the distinctive contemporary development projects could be assessed by analyzing them from a historical perspective.
