A trajetória do desenvolvimento capitalista no Rio Grande do Sul

Abstract: This paper describes the process of capitalist development in the state of Rio Grande do Sul — Brazil during the XX" Century. During the crucial period of capitalist transition in Brazil (1989-30), contrasting with the model of development of the country as a whole, the model which was established in the state was different in many aspects. During the 1930-61 years, this peculiar regional model of development appears to have been exhausted, initianting a transition which ended with a crisis in the regional economy. After that period, both the state Government and the regional economic agents undertooka number of measures designed to fight the crisis. As a result, an expressive structural change was observed in the economy and society of the state. This enhanced economic growth and productive modernisation, generating a new economy for Rio Grande do Sul from the 1970s onwards.
