Abstract
This article examines the relationship between exports and economic growth in Rio Grande do Sul (RS). From 1951/66, the export base of RS explained 85% and economic base explained 95.3% of the RS GNP growth. The share of the State International exports, relative to its total exports, increased from 9%> in 1960 to 30% in 1972. The share of the manufactured exports, relative to its total International exports, increased from 35.5%, in 1980 to 61.3% in 2000. The correlation coefficient between these exports and GNP was 95.4%o for RS, 85.5% for Paraná and 91.6%o for Brazil. As result of the Argentina crisis and USA protectionism, the RS has diversified its exports to other external markets like China, European and others Latin American countries. The conclusion is that the opening toward new markets for manufactured products is essential for the economic growth. This requires new investments in human capital and research for new technology.
