- Abstract
- This article aims to present a discussion on the evolution of Argentinian banking during the last quarter of the nineteenth century, a period known as the golden age of the export-led model. The work is divided into four parts. In the first one, it describes the evolution of the first financial institutions in Argentina, with emphasis on the creation of the Banco de Ia Província de Buenos Aires and of the Banco Nacional. In the second one it focuses on the first attempt to create a national currency in Argentina, where the case of Bancos Garantidos is important. The third one deals with the influence of private banks in Argentina, in which the Barings Brothers is the most famous player in the largest financial crisis in the period. The last part studies the banking crisis of the nineties and the Monetary Reform implemented in 1899.
