- The purpose of this article is to analyse the evolution of long term credit for investments and its institutions in Brazil and, specifically, in Rio Grande do Sul: The institutions for this kind of credit are development banks, financialfunds and capital venturecompaniés which objectives and operational policies are oriented for economic growth. The article leads us to the conclusion that the Brazilian economic development process induced an improving geographical decentralization in development banks operations, from world institutions, likeBIRD, tostate ovmed institutions, like BADESUL, in Rio Grande do Sul, passing through others continental, national and regional institutions. This trend formed in Rio Grande do Sul an institutional duality between the regional development bank, BRDE, and the State development bank. Both subsisted, until now, with no serious problems, but they deserve, for the future, a reavaluation of each specific role in the oficial State financial system.
