Abstract

This paper focuses on internal migrations and their relation with the processes of concentration and deconcentration of the regional urban space. The main objective was to synthesize concepts and theoretical questions regarding the changes that the urban space of the main metropolitan regions of Brazil has been experiencing, these questions that go beyond traditional academic divisions and include contributions from economics, geography and urban sociology. Recent studies point to a continuing and growing metropolitan restructuring of urban space, which is expressed by the decentralization of economic activities in terms of their spatial location and reducing the population growth in major centers. In this latest scenario, the emergence of new regional centers and for a redirection of internal migratory movements constitute the most important elements.
