Agricultural implements and machinery industry in RS: notes on the recent configuration

Abstract

The article focuses the production of agricultural equipment in Rio Grande do Sul, specially in the Norwest Region of the State, that involves the Regional Development Councils (Coredes) called Alto Jacuí, Fronteira Noroeste, Noroeste Colonial and Produção. These region is responsible for the major part of the production and the employment of MIA in Rio Grande do Sul, due to the existence of two big industrial plants, that are linked to international groups, the John Deere do Brasil S.A and the AGCO do Brasil Ltda. Beginning with a quick historical review about the implementation of agricultural equipment production in Brasil and Rio Grande do Sul, the article discusses the vigorous process of fusions and acquisitions of industrial plants, that began in the 70th and got stronger in the last decade. Finally, considering new configuration of the production of agricultural equipment, the article analyses its recently performance.
