Abstract

Abstract It is argued in this article that the 1893 Civil War in Rio Grande do Sul was the military event deriving from the foundation of the modern bourgeois State by the regional positivist vanguard. The bourgeois state.s military victory over the local potentate of the traditional oligarchy established the autonomy of the State in relation to the more numerous and more militarily powerful portion of the regional ruling class.
