Abstract

ABSTRACT The aim of this paper is to analyze the labor market of young people in the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre (RMPA) for the Lula government (2003-2010). The methodology employed was the collection of information in databases such as FEE, IBGE, IPEA, ILO and MTE. In addition, we used the software, spatial data analysis, GeoDa. The results reveal that youth employment grew by almost 20% in RMPA. Some sectors such as trade and services grew above the average, to the detriment of the industrial sector. On the other hand, there was a reduction in income, measured in minimum wages in this region and in this age group. This fact can be explained by the high rate of growth in real minimum wage during the period, well above the market growth of youth work in the region.
