An exploratory analysis of the factors that condition the youth participation in activities of study and work in the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre

Abstract

This paper approach, in an exploratory way, the factors that condition the youth participation in activities of study and work in the Metropolitan Area of Porto Alegre, Brazil. To reach this goal, the methodological procedure used is the estimation of the multinomial logit model for samples of youth males and youth females in 1993 and 2003. The results of the model estimation shows satisfactory, confirming, in a general way, that youth’ age and schooling, head of the household’ schooling and activity condition, household income and dependency rate are the correct explanatory variables. As it is evidenced in the body of the paper, a great proportion of the estimated coefficients of the explanatory variables is statistically significant, revealing effects on the different situations of study and work of youth that meet the expectations formulated by the literature reviewed in the paper.
