Abstract

Assuming that education is an attribute that defines the conditions of individuals’ insertion in the labor market, this study intends to outline the transformations in the youths’ profiles of schooling in the Metropolitan Area of Porto Alegre (RMPA), South of Brazil, between 1993 and 2002. This subject has gained relevance nowadays since it is assumed that we are before an increasingly selected labor market in terms of education, either in face of new production processes or due to the strong competition for jobs, given that the economy has had a low capacity to generate employment. As the main empirical results, the study identified an increase in the share of youths that study only in the RMPA, a substantial improvement of the profile of schooling of this demographic group, a reduction in its participation in the labor market, as well a high growth in the youth unemployment rate, independent of the level of schooling.
