Keywords:

The article analyses the regional changes in the labor employment and in the product, measured in terms of value added, occurred in the sectors of agriculture, industry, services and the total of the economy of the state of Rio Grande do Sul from 1996 to 2000. The convergence of the state regions, in terms of labor employed per unit of value added, is analyzed for each sector and the total of the economy, through Markov matrices. The state industry converges to lower levels of labor employed per unit of product, or in other words, to higher levels of labor productivity, but this happens only in few regions of the state. In agriculture, there is also a tendency of reduction in the labor per unit of product in the majority of the state regions. In the services sector there is a tendency of an increase in labor employed per unit of value added, which is stronger in a few regions.Downloads
