Abstract

This paper analyzes the demographic evolution in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in the last decades and tries to establish the relationship between this dynamic and the growth of the economically active population (PEA), emphasizing the behavior of rural population and labor in agriculture. From the analysis of demographic dynamics, we discuss the localization of expulsion origins, pointing out that these origins are located in areas where private establishments are predominant. We conclude that the reduction of rural population is caused by the expulsion of people employed in agricultural activities and that this process occurs in the non-metropolitan region, in rural areas where crops such as maize, soybeans and tobacco predominate.
