Using econometric methods, this articles contrasts the proposition that economic growth could return Rio Grande do Sul industrial employment back to its pre-Real Plan historical levels, against the data interpretation that suggests that output increases would decrease industrial employment. Our results suggest that, given the current productive restructuring. Rio Grande do Sur’s industrial employment growth would come from real wage reductions, not from output increases.
